North Fourth’s Two Worlds Presents Asdzani Shash: The Woman...Bear
Asdzani Shash: The Woman Who Turned into a Bear is a modernized retelling of a Navajo legend about a contemporary Navajo woman who lives on The Edge of the reservation and works in a convalescent home for the aged. This powerful two-act play by Rhiana Yazzie is being fully produced by Two Worlds for a nine day run on the first three weekends of August. The play is directed by Kim Delfina Gleason, who coincidentally was invited to Minnesota in June to perform as the lead in New Native Theatre's production of the same play at the Minneapolis American Indian Center. This exciting opportunity has given Gleason a unique insight for mounting the Two Worlds Production at North Fourth.
The Two Worlds theme is the struggle faced by many in the Native American community-modern modes vs. traditional way, urban life vs. life on the reservations the material world vs. the spiritual. All work presented and produced in the Two Worlds program is the product of Native American writers, directors, producers, actors and crew members. Two Worlds 2011 is supported in part by New Mexico Arts, a division of New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs.August 12-21, 2011
