Horse Trade Theater Group Appoints New Artistic Director

By: Aug. 25, 2010

Horse Trade Theater Group (Erez Ziv, Managing Director, Heidi Grumelot, Artistic Director) announces that Heidi G. Grumelot has been named the company's new Artistic Director.

Heidi G. Grumelot joined the staff at Horse Trade Theater Group in 2008. She is co-creator and producer of the monthly storytelling show TOLD and the founding director of The Drafts, an acting ensemble responsible for development of over forty original plays to date as part of a monthly reading series. She is also the Resident Coordinator for Horse Trade's six resident theatre companies.

Heidi's New York directing credits include punkrock/lovesong at The Brick, Dido and Aeneas with The New York Collective of Performing Arts at The West End Theater and The Boston Early Music Festival, A River Pure for Healing and An Absolutely Perfect Life at UNDER St Marks Theater, Accidents Do Happen, Tom's Things, and Turning the Glass Around in The Red Room. Assistant director credits include Antony and Cleopatra, Love's Labour's Lost, and A Christmas Carol for the American Shakespeare Center. She has also directed productions in Michigan, Virginia, and Mexico.

Prior to working at Horse Trade, Heidi worked for Laura Stanzyck Casting and The Public Theater's Casting Department. Casting Assistant credits include Impressionism on Broadway, The Cripple of Inishman at Atlantic Theater Company, The Shawshank Redemption at The Gaiety Theater in Dublin, Holiday Garland at The Westport Country Playhouse, and Hamlet and Hair at Shakespeare in the Park.

"Horse Trade has not had an Artistic Director since 2005 when founding member and Horse Trades second AD left to pursue another career. In the interim I have been holding down the fort and patiently waiting for the right person to show up and demonstrate their passion, commitment and stamina. After years of waiting the right person has finally come along," states Horse Trade's Managing Director, Erez Ziv. "Heidi has the experience and the passion required to fill this complex post and Horse Trade is very lucky to have run across her."

Heidi strongly believes in Horse Trade Theater Group's self-sustained business model. She stands behind the vast artistic community that lives and works in the Horse Trade spaces, and is a proponent of all DIY artists in New York City. Heidi believes Horse Trade is a place where passionate artists can create art on their own terms, and to that end advocates Horse Trade's open submission policy, playwrighting workshops, Drafts Ensemble, Guest Artist Productions, and Resident Artist Program. In her new role as Artistic Director she plans to develop more opportunities for new voices at Horse Trade.

HORSE TRADE THEATER GROUP is a self-sustaining theater development group; with a focus on new work, it has produced a massive quantity of stimulating downtown theater. Horse Trade's Resident Artist Program offers a home to a select group of Independent Theater artists, pooling together a great deal of talent and energy. It is also the home of FRIGID New York - the first and only festival of its kind in New York City.
