HAMLET MACABRE CABARET Comes to Historic Stonewall Inn This Fall

HAMLET MACABRE CABARET a modern & sexually charged retelling of William Shakespeare's classic text HAMLET, conceived and directed by Sheila Morgan will make its world premiere in a limited engagement run Monday, October 22nd to Thursday, November 1st at the Stonewall Inn at 53 Christopher Street, NYC.

HAMLET MACABRE CABARET reshapes the classic text of Shakespeare's masterpiece into a contemporary drama about a young hipster's struggle with mental illness, substance abuse and the premature death of his beloved father. Set upstairs at the iconic Stonewall Inn, the royal crime family gathers to enjoy the return of famous cabaret performer Rosencrantz, Hamlet's first love - and watches with horror as the Prince unravels into madness, provoked by his drug-induced hallucinations. Performing the haunting 'pop' hits of Renaissance composer John Dowland and edited to a lean 90 minutes, this unique production is certainly a Hamlet for the new millennium.

William Shakespeare (playwright) was an English poet, dramatist and actor, often called the English national poet and considered by many to be the greatest dramatist of all time. Shakespeare occupies a position unique in world literature. Other poets, such as Homer and Dante, and novelists, such as Tolstoy and Dickens, have transcended national barriers; but no writer's living reputation can compare to that of Shakespeare, whose plays, written in the late 16th and early 17th centuries for a small repertory theatre are now performed and read more often and in more countries than ever before.

Sheila Morgan (Director) is a graduate of Brandeis University and has been producing theater in New York City for the past 20 years. Her original play Electra Votes was in the NY International Fringe Festival and original play Seeking Eden well reviewed by Backstage. She is the founder of the community theater company BLUNT and is a successful producer and performer among New York City's premiere underground parties.

John Dowland (Composer) is characterized as "The Forgotten Bard Who Shaped Pop" in a 2017 BBC article. Dowland was a composer, lutenist, and singer considered one of the best musicians of the English Renaissance. Although written 400 years ago, Dowland's music has a haunting quality that perfectly enhances the melancholy of Shakespeare's Hamlet, and sounds so contemporary.

The cast of HAMLET MACABRE CABARET features Alec Seymour, Jordan Louis Fischer, Kate McGarrigle, Alexandra Cremer, Glenn Stoops, Mike Durell, and voice-over by Sheila Morgan.
