Brooklyn Arts Exchange to Present A SEAT AT THE TABLE, 6/13-14

By:

Join BAX | Brooklyn Arts Exchange on Saturday, June 13th and Sunday, June 14th along with an exceptional ensemble of young artists for "A Seat at the Table," an interactive performance event interrupting the biases, bigotry and "isms" that hide in each and every one of us.

Created in collaboration with professional organizers, researchers and journalists working deeply in the fields of racial, gender, economic, and restorative justice, "A Seat at the Table" is a guided tour through the causes, impacts and roles we each play in the daily drama of race, identity and the struggle for inclusion in the American Story.

The performance is the culmination of Act Like You Care, a year-long partnership between 2014-15 Teaching Artist in Residence Daniel Carlton, an award winning actor and playwright, and an ensemble of young artists, ages 12 to 20, from all over the NYC metropolitan area.

Through humor, drama, testimony and audience participation, "A Seat at the Table" poses questions, inspires thought, and provides insight into our hidden biases, the world that fostered them, and the hard work of addressing them.

Daniel Carlton (2014 BAX Teaching Artist in Residence) is a theater artist and educator working at the intersection of performance, research and civic practice. He is interested in the ways that collaboration, improvisation and reflection can open new pathways, integrate new perspectives and shine light on hidden barriers to progress on crucial dialogues. An award-winning performer, he has appeared on professional stages in over 35 states and four countries. His work as a playwright and director has helped share real life stories about the impacts of free trade and migration on communities at home and abroad. As an educator, he has created and facilitated arts and project-based curriculum for schools and cultural institutions around the world. He is unbelievably excited to be supporting the growth and development of the youth, the resident artists and the programs of the Brooklyn Arts Exchange.

The Teaching Artist in Residence Program (TAIR) at BAX | Brooklyn Arts Exchange includes creating an original work with student artists (may also include professional artists) and developing one's own teaching artist practice through interaction with established BAX programs.

The TAIR explores his/her discipline through regular interaction with students, teachers and community members and through a variety of components that may include professional development workshops, classes, lectures and discussions, rehearsals, performances, community events, and a final performance. BAX partners with the TAIR in strategies that engage students and community members in understanding the role of the artist in contemporary society and specifically in NYC, as a unique place for arts educators, cultural institutions and students to collaborate with one another.

While the TAIR's activities may not mirror the other artists in residence, the TAIR is part of the 2014-15 AIR peer group and as such participate in group meetings approximately every six weeks throughout the year for three hours each. AIR's share their success and challenges. BAX is a place for artists to engage in "real talk" as opposed to "getting the gig", to speak honestly about their struggles and by doing so achieve artistic maturity.
