BROKE WIDE OPEN Launches National Tour

By: Feb. 07, 2011

Rock WILK, a New York City performance artist, is about to embark on a renegade national tour of his one man play, BROKE WIDE OPEN. This "unplugged" version will be presented raw with minimal lights, sound amplification, and set to focus on the story of the show. With a goal to go across country and few resources to do so, Mr. WILK turned to friends, supporters, and strangers for his national tour fundraising efforts. After a successful, grassroots campaign to get his show on the road, Mr. WILK raised the money to make his dream come true.  BROKE WIDE OPEN will be performing in Denver, Seattle, Oakland, Los Angeles and Chicago, from March 10th through March 20th, five cities in ten days. Rock WILK has not only been the actor and writer for BROKE WIDE OPEN, but he has had to step in as tour manager, booking manager, and travel agent. "I've done everything from renting cars to booking theatres to renting motel rooms," says Rock WILK. Written and performed by Rock WILK,  BROKE WIDE OPEN is a musical and poetic avalanche of words dramatically cascading into the compelling journey of one man's search for his biological mother, his identity, his home. Best described as a verbal opera, Rock WILK is a one person symphony, conducting a dynamic movement of language weaved into a beautiful theatrical experience. "This tour was an idea to help the developmental process of the play by stripping down the show to it's purest form," says Rock WILK about the "unplugged" version of BROKE WIDE OPEN.

An actor, a playwright and a poet, New York City's own Rock WILK is also a socially and politically charged vocalist and an accomplished multi-instrumentalist. He creates all of this art while riding the subways of NYC. Along with being a Nuyorican Poet's semifinalist and 2010 runoffs qualifier for The Nuyorican's national team, Rock WILK also was recently a featured performer for Amnesty International at an event for human rights.  He has worked as a studio and touring background vocalist for many years, most recently singing with the legendary Patti LaBelle and contributing vocal and horn arrangements to the Grammy Award winning Les Paul compilation album, LES PAUL AND FRIENDS.  Rock's music can also be heard on such TV shows as MTV's "The Real World" and "Making The Band", among others.

BROKE WIDE OPEN was recently presented at undergroundzero, which is part of the Playgroundzero Festival at the acclaimed theater, Performance Space 122 in Manhattan.  BROKE WIDE OPEN was also recently mounted as a 3 week, 12 performance workshop at The Medicine Show Theatre, also in NYC.
