Urban Stages’ reach extends beyond the stage, throughout the boroughs, and into the city’s Public Libraries, with Urban Stages On Tour series, which brings quality free theatre reflecting the city’s multiculturalism to diverse audiences across the Five Boroughs. This program entertains, enlightens, and encourages people to appreciate live theatre while introducing them to the amazing and interesting people who are at the heart of each piece.

For two weeks only, Urban Stages (Frances Hill. Artistic Director) will present a snapshot of the series at their theatre which is located at 259 West 30 Street. For reservations, email urbanstages@gmail.com or call 212-695-5131, the tickets are FREE with a suggested donation.

MADAM C.J. WALKER, written and performed by Jo Tanner

An inspiring solo performance piece depicting the life and times of the legendary turn-of-the century African American inventor and entrepreneur Madam C.J. Walker, who earned a fortune selling "hair goods and preparations" to other African Americans and became America's first black female millionaire.

ROSIE, by Adrianna Rogers, directed by Brigitte Viellieu-Davis, performed by Rachel Sullivan

A dynamic one woman show, Rosie reveals the true story behind the birth of the independent American working woman.  During World War II, the men were drafted into the military, leaving numerous important jobs vacant.  A cultural icon, “Rosie the Riveter” represents the courageous women who left their kitchens and took over the jobs the men left behind.

AT THE POLE, by Stanton Wood, directed by Shana Gold , performed by Terence Archie

Matthew Henson was an African-American explorer who was with Robert Peary when he discovered the North Pole at the turn of the Century.  Hear an account of his exciting artic journey and his contribution to the ground breaking discovery!

THE PEANUT PRINCE, written and performed by Terence Archie, directed by Tamilla Woodard

How much stuff can you do with a peanut?  George Washington Carver found over 300 ways to use a peanut, including laundry soap and "peanut orange punch."  Carver was a former slave that spent his life doing research on plants.  He was world famous and beloved; presidents consulted him, and Thomas Edison offered him the equivalent of a million bucks a year to work for him (and Carver said no!).

 AROUND THE WORLD FOR MAGDA MAGELLAN, created & performed by Dan Kitrosser

Actor/Storyteller Dan Kitrosser is Millius Magellan, the son of the famous fantastical explorer Magda Magellan.  When his mother goes missing, Millius traces her steps around the world in search for her, meeting a whole slew of characters from perturbed pumpkins and leaned lambs to beautiful witches, each with a story to tell and a clue to the whereabouts of Magda.  While playing more than a dozen characters, Kitrosser takes classic stories from around the world (as well as a few from his own pocket) and weaves them into this hilarious and heartwarming interactive show.

RHYTHM AND SOUND IN THE THEATRE, created and performed by Jon Berger (for children 5 and up)

This show was a favorite in Brooklyn Public libraries this past summer. Utilizing percussion instruments from all over the world, Mr. Berger will show how percussion is used in theater and in other mediums to tell stories, create moods, and enhance movement. Join in, so you can experience the power and language of music by creating on the spot sounds for dancers and readings from books! Jon Bergen has been a drummer, percussionist and teacher for over 20 years. He has toured internationally with many classic musical theater productions, as well as on Broadway (such shows as Cats, Saturday Night Fever, Suessical.) He also played with a variety of artists in Jazz, Funk, Rock, Classical, Folk, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban music.

WARRIORS DON’T CRY, by Eisa Davis (based on the memoir by Melba Pattillo Beals), directed by Trezana Beverley performed by Danielle Renee

An empowering adaptation by 2007 Pulitzer Prize Finalist, Eisa Davis (BULRUSHER), WARRIORS DON’T CRY chronicles the true-life story of Melba Pattillo Beals, one of the Little Rock Nine.  In 1957, with the help of Eisenhower’s troops, Beals marched with eight other students through segregationist picket lines to attend Central High School, marking the beginning of American integration.  This is a historical account that uses strong language.

FRIDA LIBRADO (FRIDA SET FREE), written and directed by Brigitte Viellieu-Davis, performed by Georgina Corbo

The spirit of Frida Kahlo returns to tell the tale of her life and inspire us with her joy of living despite pain and heart-break.  The iconic Mexican painter, activist and maverick of her time illuminates her work and struggles through monologue, song and images of select paintings she created in her brief life.  Frida will rouse in each audience member the glory of imagination and the will to embrace our existence against all odds.
