Trey McIntyre Project Makes New York Debut At The Joyce Theater 6/2-6/7

The Joyce Theater is thrilled to open its 2009 summer season with Trey McIntyre Project, a contemporary ballet company founded in 2004 by one of the world's most vibrant choreographers, with a week-long engagement from June 2-7. Come experience Trey McIntyre Project as the company makes its NYC debut with a performance exuding supreme physicality. Mr. McIntyre has had a prolific 18-year career creating works for companies ranging from American Ballet Theatre to Stuttgart Ballet to Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. Using classical ballet as the point of departure, McIntyre creates emotionally-charged dances that defy categorization. See three of his highly acclaimed pieces, including (serious) to music by Henry Cowell and Leatherwing Bat, set to a medley of Peter, Paul and Mary songs.

Trey McIntyre is one of the most sought-after choreographers working today. Born in Wichita, KS, McIntyre studied at the North Carolina School of the Arts and later with Houston Ballet Academy. In 1989, McIntyre was named Choreographic Apprentice to Houston Ballet, a position created specially for him by Artistic Director Ben Stevenson. Since then, McIntyre has created a canon of more than 80 works for companies such as American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet and Ballet de Santiago (Chile). Trey has served as Resident Choreographer for Oregon Ballet Theatre, Ballet Memphis and The Washington Ballet. From 1995 until 2007, he was Choreographic Associate for Houston Ballet. He has received many grants and awards, including two choreographic fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and a Choo-San Goh Award for Choreography. He was named one of Dance Magazine's "25 to Watch" in 2001 and one of People Magazine's "25 Hottest Bachelors" in 2003. In 2004, McIntyre established his critically-acclaimed Trey McIntyre Project, a dance company that allows him to continue his artistic and creative relationships with a select group of high-caliber dancers. In the summer of 2008 at Jacob's Pillow, Trey McIntyre Project launched as a full-time company operating out of Boise, ID. In its first season Trey McIntyre Project will have toured to more than 25 cities across the nation and the world.

Three short years ago, Trey McIntyre Project burst onto the national dance scene with its debut performances at The Vail International Dance Festival. Trey McIntyre Project's "fresh and forward-thinking choreography" (Washington Post) was an immediate sensation with both critics and audiences alike. Led by celebrated choreographer Trey McIntyre, whose work has been commissioned by top ballet companies around the world, Trey McIntyre Project also boasts an ensemble of top professional dancers, coming together to further McIntyre's unique choreographic vision.

Since its first summer season, the Company has gone on to perform at some of the most prestigious venues in the country, including Jacob's Pillow, Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts and the Aspen Dance Festival, premiering works created during annual summer residencies at White Oak Plantation. Guided by the choreographer's unparalleled ear for musical structures, Trey McIntyre Project's repertoire spans classical music (The Blue Boy to Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1), rock (A Day in the Life, set to music by The Beatles and High Lonesome to music by Beck), jazz (Sacred Ellington, a collaboration with opera legend Jessye Norman, and Ma Maison to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band) and historic bluegrass music selections (Go Out).

Because of the overwhelmingly positive critical reception of the Company's work since its founding in 2004 and the success of its operational model, Trey McIntyre Project incorporated as a non-profit entity in order to be able to support a full-time, international touring company. Trey McIntyre Project made its Company world debut in its new form at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival on August 20, 2008 and launched a 25-city tour across the United States and abroad for the 2008-09 season. McIntyre's ambitious new multi-media ballet about the effects of global warming, commissioned jointly by the Wolf Trap National Park and Glacier National Park for its Face of America program, will premiere in the summer of 2009 as part of the Company's tour across America.

Trey McIntyre Project will perform according to the following schedule at The Joyce Theater from June 2-7: Tuesday - Wednesday at 7:30pm, Thursday - Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 2pm & 7:30pm.
