THE BIG BUPKIS! Plays Final Performance 1/30

By:

The highly praised one-man show "The Big Bupkis! A Complete Gentile's Guide to Yiddish vaudeville," starring the Yiddish matinee idol, Shane Bertram Baker, will close on Saturday, January 30 at 8pm before moving on to bigger, bupkisier things. The hit show, an irreverent yet loving survey of some of the highlights and lowlights of Yiddish Vaudeville throughout the ages, which the Jewish Standard called "laugh-out-loud funny," will have played 16 performances since beginning previews November 7 and opening on December 5.

"The Big Bupkis!" which took a brief holiday hiatus, resumes performances on Saturday, January 16 at 8pm. The remaining performances are Saturdays, January 16, 23 and 30 at 8pm, and Sundays, January 17 and 24 at 7pm. There is an added matinee on Sunday, January 24 at 3pm. Please note time change from previous schedule (Saturdays are now at 8pm instead of 9pm). The new ticket price, reduced from $25, is now $18, so sometimes it pays to wait. "The Big Bupkis!" performs at The New Yiddish Rep's permanent home at The Workmen's Circle, 45 East 33rd Street.

Co-conceived and directed by Allen Lewis Rickman, a battle-hardened veteran of Yiddish theater, "The Big Bupkis!" is an evening of cheap jokes, magic, ukulele music, hypnotism, unpleasant stories about Sophie Tucker, transvestism, and a Yiddish bullfight poem, among other theatrical indignities. Giving nothing away, the show ends with Mr. Baker attempting to behead a volunteer from the audience. Produced by the New Yiddish Rep, downtown's upstart Yiddish theater, "The Big Bupkis!" mixes English and Yiddish, with English supertitles projected over the stage. The legendary Steve Sterner, a veteran of Broadway, Off-Broadway and the Yiddish theater, accompanies Mr. Baker.
