Roberts & Schulman's THE GOLDSTEIN VARIATIONS Gets Workshop 5/12-15; Aiming for Off-Broadway Late This Year

Music, Lyrics, and Book duo Michael Roberts and Charlie Schulman reunite once again after their recent production of The Fartiste, which had a successful run Off-Broadway in 2011-12 and West End Concert following its 2006 FringeNYC Outstanding Musical Award. Their newest venture, The Goldstein Variations, after concert presentations at the JCC in Manhattan, American University, and Abingdon Theater, will be seen by supporters at The Playroom Theater in a limited, developmental presentation from May 12th through 15th, open to the general public. The Goldstein Variations will be directed by Daniel Kutner.

Most recently recognized as the Composer/Lyricist for GREED: A Musical for Our Times, which played this season at New World Stages, Michael Roberts is also the mind behind the wildly successful GOLF: The Musical, which has seen two Off-Broadway revivals and regional productions in 25 states and 5 countries. Charlie Schulman is the recipient of a Special Outer Critics Circle Commendation for his Off-Broadway play The Birthday Present. Additionally, he penned The Ground Zero Club, produced Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons, and Angel of Death, produced at American Jewish Theatre. Daniel Kutner is the resident Associate Director to Broadway Legend Harold Prince - projects including Alfred Urhy's LoveMusik on Broadway at Manhattan Theatre Club and Richard Nelson, Ellen Fitzhugh, & Jonathan Tunick's Paradise Found in London. Additionally, he directed the world premiere of I Love You Because at the Village Theater, having previously directed it for the National Alliance of Musical Theatre.

The Goldstein Variations will see an Off-Broadway transfer in late 2014.

The new musical features a first rate cast. Erik Liberman* leads the ensemble cast in the role of Louis, the youngest son of multi-generational, immigrant, Jewish family that has written a tell-all novel spilling family secrets. Liberman is known for his Broadway appearance in LoveMusik as well as the premiere of Kooman and Dimond' Dani Girl. Analisa Leaming* will once again join Roberts and Schulman after performing Off-Broadway in The Fartiste and the Encores! productions of Where's Charley and Pipe Dream. Dominique Plaisant*, from the Broadway productions of The Wild Party and Lestat, joins the cast as well as Jim Poulos*, having played Mark Cohen in RENT on Broadway for two years. The cast also includes Gretchen Bieber*, Ali Gordon*, and Michael Dean Morgan*. The production's Music Director is Rachel A. Kaufman. The Goldstein Variations will feature scenic and costume design by Timothy Mackabee and Deborah Wheatley, lighting by Joan Racho-Jansen, and will be stage managed by Shae Candelaria.

The Goldstein Variations will be presented as a developmental production at The Playroom Theater from May 12th - May 15th. Performances will take place at 8:00pm on Monday, May 12th; 5:00pm and 8:00pm on Tuesday, May 13th and Wednesday, May 14th; and 3pm on Thursday, May 15th.
