A smash hit at the 2009 Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival in May, Pie- Face! The Adventures of Anita Bryant will make its New York premiere at FringeNYC.

Before there was Sarah Palin or Miss California...there was Anita Bryant. Created from actual historical events and interviews, Pie Face! is a colorful one-man musical pastiche that exploits the misadventures of Anita Bryant-- the ex-beauty queen and Florida orange juice spokeswoman -- who launched her scandalous conservative "Save Our Children" campaign in 1977.

That anti-gay tirade might've won her some battles in Florida but it galvanized gay activists across the country, including leader Harvey Milk, and ultimately imploded her own entertainment career.

"I decided to write a performance piece about how the anti-gay adoption laws were set into place in the Sunshine State and discovered that most of the ground work was laid in the 70's by Anita Bryant", explains David Karl Lee, writer of Pie-Face! and who also portrays "Anita."

Florida remains the only state with a law prohibiting gay men and lesbian citizens, both couples and individuals, from adopting children.

"With the gay community still fighting this battle and with new anti-gay spokespersons like Miss California getting attention, I feel this play profoundly resonates," notes Kenny Howard, director of Pie-Face.
