MUSICA NUDA: MAGONI & SPINETTI, Tuesday, September 23 at 7:30 PM, $15

Musica Nuda refers to the art of stripping down a piece of music, regardless of genre, while preserving its intimate essence.  It's the art of valuing the often overlooked  "musical silence" and it's also the art of using humor to confront opposing extremes as evidenced by Magoni's ethereal voice and Spinetti's witty anachronistic acoustic bass. PLASTIC PEOPLE OF THE UNIVERSE, WEDNESDAY, September 24 at 9:30 PM, $25

"A Velvets-Beefheart-Zappa stew with Czech lyrics, free jazz saxophone, grungy viola, crunchy guitar solos, etc., but what makes it unique is the applause. This audience knows that rock & roll can start a revolution and set you free: It happened."  -Steven Merritt, Time Out NY.

The music of the Plastic People is like nothing else; it's dark, rich composition spans musical influences from free jazz, hard rock, Slavic motifs, and '60's and '70's song-styling. Their music embodies a whole manner of thinking and way of life, and it demands that we reexamine the way we live our lives.

MARLO MARRON W/ STUFFY SHMITT, September 25 at 7:00 PM, SOLD OUT

RACHAEL YAMAGATA Thursday, September 25 at 9:30 PM & 11:30PM, SOLD OUT

RACHEL UNTHANK W/ DEVON SPROULE, Friday, September 26 at 7:00 PM, $12

"Music as tough as it is gentle, as ancient as it is modern, and as coldly desolate as it is achingly intimate. They might not end up being the best-selling British all-girl group of all time, but they're well on their way to being the most charismatic and imaginative" -Paul Morley, The Observer, UK

Forging links between folk worlds old, new and other, Rachel Unthank has blown a bracing north-easterly gale through traditional English song, casting it in an endlessly inventive and playful new mould. Transcendent and grounded music folds around unsentimental old, new and imaginatively borrowed stories of booze, brawls, abuse, loss, fear, infantile death, depravity and sorrow.

DAVE DOOBININ: THE BIRTH OF WONDER CD RELEASE, Friday, September 26 at 9:30 PM, $12

David Doobinin is a songwriter, first and foremost. On his third record "The Birth Of Wonder" he proves his immense capacity for empathy, organic emotion and the ability to perfectly capture a moment, set it to a melody and evoke something in people. David Doobinin is a wandering spirit, hopeless romantic, world traveler and artistic soul. He calls Coney Island his home, which is fitting for who he is as an artist and a man. Like Coney Island, bright and alive and rough around the edges, Dave Doobinin walks the board walk, his own minstrel show, lives next to a lighthouse, and hangs out at the freak show sometimes.

MIKE VIOLA AND KELLY JONES Mike's Birthday Show! Friday, September 26 at 11:30 PM, $15

Mike Viola is best known as a singer, songwriter and musical architect of the Candy Butchers, a highly regarded indie pop-rock band from New York that recorded three critically acclaimed albums for Sony, including 2003's fan favorite Hang on Mike. Viola's film work began a decade ago as the co-producer and lead singer of the title track That Thing You Do!, which went on to earn an Oscar® nomination for Best Original Song. With two albums under her belt and a third along the way, Washington-born singer-songwriter Kelly Jones has grown to surpass the boundaries of surface pop and country, creating a melding of Americana-Pop all her own.  Her last albums, Brave Heartache and Handle with Care, have brought her a wide-spread fanbase and a musical styling that continues to evolve into a more complex and diverse range of music and instrumentation, implemented both recorded and live.

PIERCE TURNER, Saturday, September 27 at 7:00 PM, $23

"Easily one of Ireland's most important rock artists of the last twenty years" -Tony Clayton-lea, The Irish Times

Whether as a singer or songwriter or performer, Pierce Turner has a penchant for the unexpected and the unorthodox, re-writing the rules for all three endeavours. Sometimes he performs from behind his trusty keyboard backed by a solo instrument (sax, maybe, or violin or trombone!). Or he can be out front- of-house clambering over tables and ordering drinks from the bar. In the middle of a song! His albums to are equally mercurial, showing influences ranging from his Catholic Irish upbringing to the decadence of Lou Reed's New York, merging the upfront rock of The Byrds, The Beach Boys and The Who to deft touches of Irish trad, folk, jazz, techno, classical and choral harmonies.

The ensemble also features his close collaborators on vocals, accordion, bass and percussion. Inspired by his collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Osvaldo Golijov, the Kronos Quartet, the rapper Jay-Z and others, Ljova's compositions dazzle with intricate textures, odd rhythms and lilting melodies, creating music that is both fresh and timeless.
