My nine year old has only read the first four of the seven Harry Potter books. I saw the first film, but for some reason, neither one of us really got bit by the Potter bug. So when we were invited to see Potted Potter, the 70-minute, two-actor, send-up of all seven Harry Potter books, I decided to bring along a real Harry Potter aficionado.

One of my daughter's oldest and dearest friends has read every Harry Potter book from top to bottom. She even had a Harry Potter themed birthday party when she turned eight. Now nine, this girl is as enchanted with the pre-pubescent wizard as ever, and I knew she would be the perfect participant for our Potted Potter litmus test:

Is Potted Potter for just Harry Potter fans or can anyone enjoy it?

The answer lies somewhere in between. While British performers Dan and Jeff do make for a hilariously funny good time, if you don't know anything about Harry you might get lost amidts the Potter references and Hogwarts "inside" jokes. So while my daughter's die-hard Harry Potter fan friend had a life-changing experience at Potted Potter, my daughter and I merely enjoyed just over an hour of two highly entertaining comedic performers. Everyone had fun, but only the real Harry Potter addict found the stuff of life-long theatrical memories.

If your child is a fan of Potter, run don't walk to the Little Shubert to catch Potted Potter before the end of this summer's NYC run on September 1st. And don't worry about being bored. This show does what I always hope children's theatre will do: It's great for kids without boring the parents. Not even a little bit. If your child hasn't read J.K. Rowling's fantastical trilogy about a boy who discovers he is a wizard, this might be the inspiration he or she needs to pick up what I am told is an addictive piece of literature.

GET TO THE POINT, MOM!

  • - Returning to NYC after a successful 2012 run and appearances all over the world, Olivier Award nominated POTTED POTTER - The Unauthorized Harry Experience - A Parody by Dan and Jeff takes on the ultimate challenge of condensing all seven Harry Potter books (and a real life game of Quidditch) into seventy hilarious minutes.
  • - Best not for any specific age group, but rather for kids who are fans of Harry Potter.
  • - For more information or to purchase tickets, visit the show's website.
  • - I really need to read those books!
