The Hurrah Players proudly announce the return of the acclaimed stage production Path to Freedom, an original and deeply moving theatrical experience that traces the evolution of African-American culture across centuries of history. Written by Corey Staten and directed by Carla Kelly-Turner, Path to Freedom takes audiences on a powerful journey from medieval West Africa through slavery in America, the Civil War and Reconstruction eras, and into modern history—culminating with the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Through music, dance, and compelling storytelling, history comes vividly to life on stage. Audiences will encounter influential historical figures including Mansa Musa, the 14th-century ruler of Mali; Anthony and Isabella Tucker, among the first Africans to arrive in Virginia in 1619; Moses Grandy and William Carney of the Antebellum and Civil War eras; pioneering business leader Maggie Walker; civil rights activist and ODU professor Dr. Jerry Carr; and television producer and Soul Train creator Don Cornelius. Path to Freedom celebrates resilience, perseverance, and cultural legacy through poignant African-American music, expressive dance, and dynamic narration—offering an educational and emotional experience for audiences of all ages.
