Theatre Projects to Bring Reading/Discussion Series to Maplewood Memorial Library

By:

The Theater Project inaugurates a monthly theatrical presentation at the Maplewood Memorial Library, OPENING NIGHTS IN THE AFTERNOON. Each month, professional actors who regularly appear with the Project and other tri-state area companies will offer a script-in-hand performance of a play being considered for future production, followed by a discussion with audience, actors, director and Theater Project staff about the pros and cons of future full production of the script. The Theater Project is an award-winning New Jersey theater in residence at the Burgdorff Center for the Performing Arts in Maplewood. The first event isSaturday, September 7 at 2 PM at the Maplewood Memorial Library, 51 Baker Street. Admission is free.

This month's presentation is a play by NY playwright Joe Calarco, Walter Cronkite IS DEAD: red state meets blue when two very different women are stranded together in an airport, and find that the only way to pass the time is to find common ground. The reading will be performed by Harriett Trangucci and Gail Lou. Ms. Lou was recently seen in HAVING OUR SAY at the Burgdorff/Theater Project.

"We are still new to Maplewood," says General Manager Gary Glor, who will direct the free series, "and offering presentations at the library and discussing the material with present and future patrons is one more way for us to get to know the community - and for the community to get to know us." The Theater Project came to Maplewood in December 2011 when it merged with The What Exit? Theatre. "I am thrilled to be able to put our best foot forward with actors like Harriett and Gail in Walter Cronkite IS DEAD," said Glor.

The Theater Project, www.thetheaterproject.org, is known for presenting outrageous comedy as well as drama with social commentary. Last November, the company tackled marriage equality, presenting a one-night-only reading of "8" by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black. The fall 2013 production, a satiric take on THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES, runs September 26 - October 13 at the Burgdorff Center for the Performing Arts, Maplewood. Classes in Juggling, Puppetry, Music Theater and Improv also begin in September.
