Original DUNKIRK Film To Screen For Free On Veterans Day At River St. Theatre

Original DUNKIRK Film To Screen For Free On Veterans Day At River St. Theatre ImageThe Park Theatre announced today that its interim theatre, the River Street Theatre, will present in honor of Veterans Day, the acclaimed WWII classic film DUNKIRK at 12 pm and 6 pm on Saturday, November 11th. The film will be presented without admission cost.

Before there was Christopher Nolan's 2017 Dunkirk film with splashy, computer-generated special effects in almost every frame, there was DUNKIRK from 1958. Made by the famous British Ealing Studios with MGM funding, it is a powerful, gripping, realistic and sobering tale of soldier bravery. One of the most significant moments in the history of British warfare is given reverent but reserved treatment in this movie. The critically noted film takes place during the 1940 evacuation of Allied troops across the English channel. One party of British soldiers becomes detached from the rest of the retreating Allies. The film stars Academy Award winning actors, John Mills and Richard Attenborough. It also stars Bernard Lee, well known for his portrayal of "M" in many of the early James Bond films. The film is directed by Leslie Norman, honored for his pioneering British television work on The Saint, The Avengers, and The Persuaders.

DUNKIRK is free for everyone, however, it is strongly recommended that reservations be made by going to www.riverst.org or calling the River Street Theatre box office at (603) 532-8888. Free pizza and soda will be given to all veterans and their families prior to each screening.

This special presentation is made possible by a sponsorship gift from Hampsey & Grenier Associates of Jaffrey.

The Park Theatre first opened in Jaffrey in 1922 and was the center of community life as a movie and vaudeville house for 54 years until it closed in 1976. Purchased by The Park Theatre in 2006, it is to be rebuilt as a state-of-the-art film and performing arts center, featuring two auditoriums seating 485, presenting live theatre, including children's productions, movies, concerts, and lectures as well as offering a place for business and community gatherings for the Monadnock Region and its 100,000 residents, school districts and dynamic artistic community. The new Park Theatre is scheduled to open in 2018.

The Park Theatre currently operates the River Street Theatre (RST), an intimate live entertainment and cinema venue, located adjacent to the construction site as an interim theatre until the new Park Theatre opens. Opened in January of 2017, the RST holds the title of "smallest theatre in New England."
