LIFE IN A MARITAL INSTITUTION is a darkly humorous and poignant autobiographical tale of lust, love, betrayal, and redemption OR the tragicomedy of married life. It has been called "a stylish monologue, reminiscent of those of Spalding Gray". The London Times and Edinburgh's Hit List called it "a masterpiece of storytelling full of humor and pungent observation." It premiered at Edinburgh Festival Fringe and played to sold-out audiences and critical acclaim at 59E59 and Soho Playhouse in New York City where it was a New York Times Critics' Pick calling the production "Full of laughs and insight. James Braly is never less than excellent". Flavorpill raved that Braly's Life In A Marital Institution "is a fast-paced mix of anger, humor, and plain weirdness". The New Yorker said "Braly presents it winningly, with a keen sense of the absurdity of everyone's eccentricities....". And Variety called it "Gaspingly funny."

The national tour of LIFE IN A MARITAL INSTITUTION is produced by Meredith Vieira and Amy Rapp of Meredith Vieira Productions, a film/TV/theatre/web Production Company based in New York City.

James Braly's stories have been broadcast nationally on This American Life, NPR, and Marketplace. He has performed in theatres, festivals, and art venues around the world, including The Whitney Museum, Long Wharf Theatre, and the Moth, where he is a two-time winner of The Moth Grandslam Storytelling Competition. He is the author of a forthcoming memoir from St. Martin's Press as well as the screenwriter of a feature film based on LIFE IN A MARITAL INSTITUTION for Meredith Vieira Productions.

LIFE IN A MARITAL INSTITUTION was James's first theatrical effort after a successful 20?year career writing motivational speeches for Fortune 500 companies. His most recent monologue, THE MONTHLY NUT (How Much Misery Does It Take To Be Happy?), directed by Seth Barrish (Sleepwalk with Me), is in development at The Barrow Group Theatre. And he recently premiered his latest offering, ASYLUM, at Dixon Place.
