The Sorcerer at Moyse Hall

The Sorcerer, an uproarious comic opera by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, follows young Alexis Poindextre, who comes to the mysterious magus John Wellington Wells seeking a potion to induce love at first sight. This unwittingly sets off a descent into magically-induced chaos that ends up engulfing the entire unsuspecting village of Ploverleigh… and requires a terrible sacrifice to set right.

Savoy is McGill’s only comic opera group and the university’s longest-running musical theater club. Our main annual production is the largest at McGill, both in terms of budget and spectacle, and is considered a highlight of the university theater season. This year’s show (our 58th) is an even bigger event than usual: it’s our first staging of The Sorcerer since 1972, as well as our first show since 2019’s Gondoliers at Moyse Hall, our traditional home.
