THE TASHME PROJECT: THE LIVING ARCHIVES Comes to Centaur Theatre Image"Matt and Julie seamlessly move from one character to the next, treating each with the utmost respect and pride... You'll hear the words 'haunting' and 'beautiful' a lot when people talk about this show, and there's good reason for that."-Kevin Reid, The Visitorium, Ottawa

The Tashme Project: The Living Archives is a deeply touching 75-minute documentary-style play that has been carefully pieced together from over 70 hours of interviews with 20 Nisei (second-generation Japanese Canadians) from across Canada. The play traces the history of the Nisei through childhood, internment and post-WWII resettlement east of the Rockies. Now seniors, the Nisei were children at the time of internment and their memories of adventure and play are presented here in sharp relief to the more common internment narratives of hardship and injustice. Moving from voice to voice and story to story with fluidity and constructed gracefulness, the piece is performed by its creators Julie Tamiko Manning and Matt Miwa, as a tribute to Nisei character, language, spirit and story.

On this 30th anniversary of the Redress Agreement, this work is more meaningful than ever.
