The Montreal English Theatre Awards (METAs) recognize and celebrate outstanding artistic work in English Theatre performed throughout Montreal. The peer-juried awards promote professional and emerging English theatre artists and companies, to heighten their visibility both regionally and beyond, and to elevate the level of critical discourse about theatre in Montreal among artists and with the community at large.

The 2016-17 Nominees were announced at a conference held at The Monument-National Café on Wednesday evening. This past season, the METAs Jury selected a total of 85 nominations. A total of 19 trophies will be awarded at the Ceremony: 16 peer-juried awards; 1 community award (determined by an independent Community Jury); and 2 honorary awards.

The hosts of this year's 5th Anniversary Awards Ceremony were announced alongside the Nominees as emerging artists David Noel and Michelle Rambharose as well as established actors Danette MacKay and Matthew Kabwe.

Noteworthy Nominees include Tableau D'hôte's Angelique (10 Nominations), Repercussion Theatre's Much Ado About Nothing (9 Nominations) Leslie Baker's Fuck You! You f-ing Perv!, (8 Nominations including Direction and Lead Performance by an Actress). Geordie Productions leads this year's list with 13 nominations for its productions of The Halloween Tree, Water Weight, and Instant, which are all nominated for Outstanding New Text.

The METAs Committee announced that the Outstanding Emerging Artist(s) Award, sponsored by the National Theatre School, will be split into two categories this year: Performance and Production. Nominees for the latter feature a costume designer, a director, two playwrights, and a stage manager. Another cross-disciplinary category is the Outstanding Contribution to Theatre Award, which includes live musical performers, projection design, video designers, and a stage manager.

Two honorary awards will again be announced at the Ceremony on October 23rd. The Unsung Hero of the Theatre (UHOT) Award honours a deserving member of a production or administrative team working behind the scenes. The second of two non-juried awards, the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Award, recognizes and encourages practices of access and inclusion. A general call for submissions invited recommendations of companies or individuals who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment this past season to reflecting the full diversity of Montreal and its artists. Nominations are welcome until September 15th.

The 5th Annual METAs Ceremony will take place on Monday, October 23rd at 7:30pm at the Rialto Theatre (5723 avenue du Parc). Tickets are 30.00$ and can be purchased online at metas.ca.
