In celebration of excellence in English-language theatre in Montreal, the Montreal English Theatre Awards Committee is pleased to release its list of 2013-2014 nominees. The second annual METAs gala will take place on Monday October 20th at 7:45pm at the Rialto Theatre (5723 avenue du Parc). Tickets ($25 + tax) will be available to the public from September 29th at www.metas.ca.

Major category changes include the amalgamation of the independent and professional categories with the exception of Outstanding Production, for which there will be one professional, one independent, and one community theatre recipient. The community theatre nominees will be announced at a later date.

Changes have been made in the jury's voting process to eliminate the possibility of a tie in any category.

The new Backstage Award will be given to a deserving member of a production team who works behind the scenes. Each registered company has been asked to submit a nomination for the award. The winner will be revealed at the METAs gala.

The Norma Springford Award, named after a pillar and trailblazer of the Montreal English theatre scene from 1941 until the mid-eighties, will be given to a founding member of the professional theatre community. To celebrate Montreal's newest talents, an emerging artist category has also been added this year.

The Montreal English Theatre Awards, or METAs, were established in 2012 as a response to the need for the Montreal English Theatre community to promote and encourage their visibility and successes provincially, nationally and internationally. These peer-juried awards celebrate the artistic work that is outstanding in Montreal English Theatre, promote professional and emerging English theatre artists & companies and facilitate a level of critical discourse.

The METAs are managed by a volunteer Committee (METAC), which consists of active members of the theatre community from various disciplines who are committed to guiding the development of this initiative and ensuring its integrity as a project "by the community and for the community". The METAs are also supported by the Quebec Drama Federation and our generous sponsors this year, The Rialto Theatre, Barefoot Wines, and Creemore Springs.
