High School in the Spotlight: Helena High School

By:

BroadwayWorld's Student Center High School Edition is back for another year! Just like the BWW College Center, the High School Center offers a directory featuring upcoming show listings for high schools nationwide. Schools can register for 'enhanced' listings on the site - adding in photos, cast lists, videos, links and more. Productions that take advantage of this will receive highlights on our listing pages, extra editorial mentions and potential spotlight features.

This week, we shine a spotlight on Helena High School in Helena, Montana!

Helena High School provides a strong foundation for lifelong learning by nurturing, challenging, and guiding all students toward their maximum academic, aesthetic, physical, social, vocational, and emotional potential.

Helena High's Fine Arts Department offers courses in Art and Photography, Music, and Theater and Video. Read more about each department below!

For those who enjoy singing, Chorus is the place to start. From there, girls and boys can audition for Philharmonic, Starlighters, or Ambiance. Performances both in and outside the school are the focus of all singing programs.

For the instrumentalist, there are a number of exciting, varied opportunities at Helena High. Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Concert Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra offer a broad range of musical choices, experiences, and performing styles. Auditions are required for most performance groups.

Music classes are all elective, but students are encouraged to get involved in some aspect of the arts and into some course in the program, which prides itself on building confidence and performance skills and success.

For those who enjoy acting the Theater department offers three levels of classes. Theater 1 which is a comprehensive class with emphasis on the basics of stagecraft. Theater 2, which focuses on performing technique and creating an acting portfolio. Theater 3 focuses on performing and directing as well as continuing the students' portfolio.

Also available are technical theater courses which focus on elementary stagecraft techniques in lighting sound and scencraft.

The Theater Department will put on a Fall production of ONCE UPON A MATTRESS (running from Nov. 5-17), a one-act festival, and THE TWO GENTLEMAN OF VERONA will be presented as the Spring production.
