Theatre 55 Announces Inaugural Production of HAIR Image

Theatre 55 is a new theatre company which focuses on adults over 55 as its primary artists and performers. January 31, 2019 will mark their inaugural production of the 1968 smash musical sensation HAIR - directed by Richard Hitchler, with choreography by Sandy Agustin, and musical direction by Stephen Houtz.

HAIR will celebrate its 50th Anniversary in 2019. "50 years later, the themes come full circle. We are still morphing, protesting, fighting for human rights and humanity. We continue to fight for equality. We continue to confront prejudice and biases. From interracial couples to same sex couples; from bra burning to the #MeToo movement; it's themes ring as true today and as resonantly as when we were young. Most of our cast is over sixty--all the way up to age seventy-nine! All of our musicians are over sixty, and over half of our designers are over fifty-five." -Richard Hitchler, Artistic Director of Theatre 55.

HAIR is a joyous and poignant rock musical that focuses on a group of politically active hippies seeking truth, peace and love while the country is divided over the Vietnam War. Friends Claude, Berger, and Sheila seek to find harmony, love and freedom during to the sexual revolution while rebelling against the war and expectations from family and society. HAIR's jubilant score is filled with such timeless favorites as "Let the Sun Shine In", "Easy To Be Hard" and "Aquarius". The themes and struggles in HAIR remain vital and relevant to the times we live in today.

Theatre 55 was formed with the purpose of developing lifelong learning through theatre performance and education. Our vision is to enrich the lives of elders as artists, audiences, and learners through educational performance art. Theatre 55 is currently fiscally sponsored through Springboard for the Arts and runs in part through the generous grants from the Minnesota Regional Arts Council and the Aroha Foundation. Using HAIR as a launchpad, Theatre 55 aims to produce more high-energy, impactful plays and utilizing the senior artists of our community. We strive to engage with vibrant seniors living throughout the Twin Cities and beyond through classes, workshops, showcases, and performance.
