Theater Latté Da To Receive $10,000 Grant From The National Endowment For The Arts

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Acting Chairman Mary Anne Carter has approved more than $27 million in grants as part of the Arts Endowment's first major funding announcement for fiscal year 2019. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $10,000 to Theater Latté Da for the NEXT Generation Commissions, a new musical theater commissioning and development opportunity with a focus on women playwrights and writers of color. Art Works is the Arts Endowment's principal grantmaking program. The agency received 1,605 Art Works applications for this round of grantmaking and will award 972 grants in this category.

"The arts enhance our communities and our lives, and we look forward to seeing these projects take place throughout the country, giving Americans opportunities to learn, to create, to heal, and to celebrate," said Mary Anne Carter, acting chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts.

"This grant from the NEA is a critical investment in the resource-intensive process of creating new musical theater work. The Twin Cities is home to a vibrant and diverse community, and the NEXT Generation Commissions program will help Theater Latté Da continue to reflect and honor this diversity with a multi-year commitment to nurturing new work from women and artists of color - voices that are too often underrepresented in the musical theater canon," said Elissa Adams, Associate Artistic Director at Theater Latté Da.

With support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Theater Latté Da's NEXT Generation Commissions program will provide commissions and developmental workshops for a project helmed by women and/or artists of color, with the ultimate goal of creating a full-scale new musical theater piece by December 2020.

The NEXT Generation Commissions is a continuation of Theater Latté Da's commitment to nurturing new work; creating a canon of musical theater that reflects the diversity of our country; and celebrating the aesthetics and perspectives of a multiplicity of voices.
