The Southern Theater Presents Quartet New Generation
By: Gabrielle Sierra Mar. 16, 2011
Hailed as "four recorder virtuosos" by The New York Times, "irresistible" by The Wall Street Journal and "magnets for the young" by the Los Angeles Times, Austro-German QNG mesmerizes its audiences through innovative programming that juxtaposes contemporary and early music. Performing on upwards of 20 different recorders of varying sizes and shapes during the course of a performance, the Quartet transports the listener into new and fascinating sonic worlds, confirming the recorder's viability as a modern classical instrument.
"I was introduced to QNG last year and prior to that had never known of an ensemble devoted to music of the recorder," said Kate Nordstrum, music curator at the Southern. "The musicians of QNG are incredible talents and use all shapes and sizes of recorders to deliver music that is new to our ears and such a treat. I think in America we have a very narrow view of what kind of sound a recorder can deliver - we don't think of it as a versatile instrument - but this ensemble proves otherwise. I set this show as a matinee to encourage adults to bring kids, as I know the concert will be fun and inspiring for all ages."Evening ProgramFulvio Caldini (b. 1959) Beata viscera (2002)
