"The greatest cabaret artist of (V's) generation" - The New Yorker

A beloved member of both the downtown New York music scene and the international queer avant garde, the singer, songwriter and performance artist Justin Bond - now named Mx. Justin Vivian Bond and "V" instead of he/she or him/her - appears at the Southern Theater in May with Rob Moose of yMusic in promotion of V's new release Dendrophile, V's first full-length album as a solo artist and produced by Thomas Bartlett (Doveman) featuring Sam Amidon, Beth Orton, Rob Moose, Dawn Landes and others. Dendrophile encapsulates the various - and constantly evolving - dimensions of Bond's career post-Kiki and Herb: music V has performed to continually sold-out audiences at New York's Joe's Pub.

Sex, gender and sexuality are foremost themes of the album-and important parts of Bond's preoccupation with nature. Bond is particularly interested in queer, specifically transgendered, identity, which V has embraced in V's transition to the mixed-gender Mx. Justin Vivian Bond. In American Wedding Bond sets to music poetry by the late queer writer-activist Essex Hemphill. The Golden Age of Hustlers was written by Bambi Lake, a transsexual woman Bond has known since V lived in San Francisco. Equipoise is largely about coming of age as a transgendered person in a small town. Salome from Bond's recent performance piece Re:Galli Blonde is a celebration of what V calls "the sacred feminine."

Performance: May 6, 2011
Friday at 8pm
Tickets: $18, $12 student rush
