TRICK BOXING Plays Guthrie Theater, Now thru Sept 2

By:

The Guthrie Theater announces the presentation of Trick Boxing by Sossy Mechanics, a fast-paced physical comedy full of rapid-fire dialogue, "Fred-and-Ginger style dancing" and puppetry that The New York Times called "the best show I have seen" when it played at the New York International Fringe Festival in 2010. Trick Boxing premiered to great success at the 2002 Minnesota Fringe Festival, has since played to audiences around the U.S., Canada and the U.K., and will appear in the Guthrie's Dowling Studio from tonight, August 17-September 2, 2012.

Trick Boxing tells the story of Danny David, a down-on-his-luck apple seller who is deceived into becoming a boxer by a shady hustler and ends up swinging his way to the championship with the aid of a wily dance hall girl named Bella. Written, directed, choreographed and performed in multiple roles by the duo of Megan McClellan and Brian Sostek (Guthrie: Roman Holiday, H.M.S. Pinafore and Charley's Aunt), Trick Boxing was described as "stuffed with more tricks than a vaudevillian's trunk" by the Star Tribune.

McClellan and Sostek met while touring together with the dance company Joe Chvala and the Flying Foot Forum and began their creative collaboration after having established independent careers in theater, dance, film and television. Their work in dance and movement-based theater has launched them on a trajectory of national and international touring and acclaim.

Single tickets for Trick Boxing start at $17. Single tickets for all Dowling Studio Productions are available through the Guthrie Box Office at 612.377.2224, toll-free 877.44.STAGE, 612.225.6244 (Group Sales) and online at guthrietheater.org.

The GUTHRIE THEATER (Joe Dowling, Director) was founded by Sir Tyrone Guthrie in 1963 and is an American center for theater performance, production, education and professional training.
