PRIDE AND PREJUDICE Will Close the Guthrie Season

The Guthrie today announced that it will commemorate the 200th anniversary of the 1813 publication of Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice with a summer production on the Wurtele Thrust Stage. The final show of the Guthrie's own 50th anniversary season, Pride and Prejudice will begin previews on July 6, with an opening night of July 12, and will run through August 31.

The classic comedy Born Yesterday, previously scheduled for summer on the Wurtele Thrust, will appear in 2013-2014.

"This is one of the most loved stories ever told in the English language," says Guthrie director Joe Dowling, who will helm the production. "Even though Jane Austen wrote it as a novel, it adapts so beautifully for the stage because the characters are so strong. It's going to be such a satisfying, rich experience for our audience."

Always at or near the top of every list of the most-loved novels in English, Pride and Prejudice tells the story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy in 19th-century England; it has proven to have evergreen appeal to all generations with its depiction of manners, marriage and morality. An adaptation of Pride and Prejudice previously appeared at the Guthrie in the 2003-2004 season; this summer's production will be based on a different adaptation.
