Theatre Pro Rata Launches Production of ROCKET MAN On Saturday, March 17, Theatre Pro Rata will open Rocket Man by Steven Dietz at the Crane Theater in Minneapolis.

The play focuses on Donny Rowan's quest to leave his old life behind for something better. He becomes obsessed with finding a world where things went differently for him, even if it means traveling to the other end of the universe or a different dimension. Though his mode of transportation appears to be an old Barcalounger, Donny eventually finds something similar to, but not quite, what he's looking for.

Theatre Pro Rata acting alum Stuart Gates first brought the script to the company's attention and will now direct the production. Commenting on what drew him to the script, he said, "Rocket Man takes an American family with struggles and regrets, and plays out what would happen if we lived our lives knowing when it all would end. That excites me most about this play. Who doesn't wonder, 'What if?' but who truly gets a chance to live it?"

Regarding the playwright, Gates added, "The great thing about working on Steven Dietz is that he not only asks the hypothetical questions we harbor deep in our hearts, but then tries to play them out."

Matt Wall stars as Donny with the cast rounded out by Anna Baker, Rachel Austin, Shana Eisenberg, and Lanny Langston.

Since 2001 Pro Rata, Latin for "in proportion," has produced smart, vivid, varied, and gutsy theater in the Twin Cities. Focusing on the text of the play, the company offers performers and audiences the chance to engage the characters, themes, and language more completely. Ranging from classic dramas to modern black comedies, Theatre Pro Rata produces scripts that bring visceral theatrical experiences to the stage.

Theatre Pro Rata utilizes a unique sliding scale for ticketing, allowing patrons to name their own price from $14 to $41.
