Oakland University Presents UNDER MILK WOOD, 2/6-16

By:

As part of an international celebration marking the 100th birthday of famed Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, the Oakland University Theatre program will present a production of his play "Under Milk Wood" from Thursday, Feb 6 through Sunday, Feb. 16 in Varner Studio Theatre.

While a visit to Wales would be an ideal way to commemorate Thomas's life and work, those who attend a performance of"Under Milk Wood" may find themselves transported in spirit. The beautifully poetic dialogue portrays the colorful inhabitants of a Welsh coastal village as they plot and laugh, hope and remember.

Charles, Prince of Wales and Thomas's granddaughter, Hannah Ellis, are the honorary patrons of the centennial celebration, which pays tribute to the late writer whose classic poem, "Do not go Gentle into That Good Night" continues to captivate readers worldwide. All nine performances of "Under Milk Wood" will be shadow-signed for the Deaf and hard of hearing by Synergy on Stage.Since the play was originally written as a radio drama, organizers say this added artistic dimension promises to turn what was once "a play for voices" into "a play for voice and hands."

Varner Studio Theatre is located on Oakland University's campus. Maps of the campus are available at oakland.edu/map or by searching for "Varner Hall" on a smartphone. Ample free parking will be available.

Tickets are $14 for general admission and $8 for students. 10 a.m. matinee performances are also $8. Tickets can be purchased in advance without service fees at startickets.com or by phone at (800) 585-3737. They can also be purchased at the Center for Student Activities Service Window in the Oakland Center or at the Varner Hall Box Office. Complete ticket information is available at oakland.edu/tickets.
