A Detroit holiday tradition

DETROIT - The internationally-acclaimed Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit continues its 27th performance season with one of metro Detroit's favorite holiday traditions, Woodward Wonderland: A Detroit Holiday Celebration, at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Woodward Wonderland celebrates everything magical about winter in the Motor City – yesteryear and today. The show is produced and performed exclusively by members of Mosaic's all-youth theatre.

As much of an annual tradition as classics like The Nutcracker and a Christmas Carol, Mosaic Youth Theatre's fun-filled holiday production puts a uniquely Detroit spin on the festive season, paying tribute to the metro area's many rich holiday traditions, from the Thanksgiving Parade and ice-skating in Campus Martius to Motown Christmas songs and the 12th Floor of J.L. Hudson's. The distinctively Detroit holiday musical is perfect for the whole family.

“Our current young artists weren't even born when Hudson's closed,” said Rick Sperling, Mosaic's Founder & Artistic Director. “So when they recreate Christmas in Detroit, they do based on fond memories they've heard, their own experiences, and their belief in a Detroit that was and will be thriving and vibrant. What they don't draw on personally is testament to their theatrical teaching and the talent they bring to the stage. It's really a fabulous and imaginative show.”

Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit opened the performance season last month with an industrial minimalist-styled version of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Mosaic's Main Stage Ensemble paid homage to Shelley with a unique interpretation of the book, adhering more closely to the original story than many famous cinematic interpretations. Shelley was 18, the same age as many Mosaic young artists, when she wrote the groundbreaking horror novel.

While theatrical performances are what most metro Detroiters know Mosaic for, its mission is around creative youth development. Nearly 500 young people ages 7-19 participate in out-of-school programs ranging from acting and vocal music ensembles, summer camp programs, and, to an annual college invitational, technical theater apprenticeships, and arts administration internships in addition to in-school programming at three Detroit Public School Community District schools.

“What we do is educate using art and the discipline of performance to help our young artists develop the critical thinking skills they'll need to succeed in the world of work,” said Stefanie Worth, Mosaic's Executive Director. “Showing up on time for rehearsals, memorizing scripts and lyrics, learning stage lighting and projection, and working with other children from different schools, backgrounds and cultures all translates to skills like applying standards, predicting, reasoning, and more – most of which AI can't replicate.”

Tickets for Mosaic's 2018-19 season shows are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $10 for youth ages 5-18. Children under age 5 are not permitted.
