Michigan State University Theatre Department Presents MEASURE FOR MEASURE, Now thru 11/18
Michigan State University continues its 2012-2013 season with William Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure. Hypocrisy and hysteria collide in this satire of religion and duty. Often referred to as one of Shakespeare’s "problem plays" and definitely one of the darkest comedies in the canon, it provides a compelling exploration of ethics and morality and explores the way we confuse lust and love, goodness and self-righteousness.
This site-specific production, presented in C203 Wonders Hall, puts audiences up close and personal as neophyte nun Isabella pleads for her brother’s life from the power-hungry Angelo. Directed by Christina Traister, the show mixes elements from the Fifteenth Century Italian Renaissance with present modern day. The design elements of set, costumes, lighting, and sound help to contrast these very different worlds, illuminating the struggle for power, oppression of the lower class, and sexism. This dark comedy definitely does not end with things neatly tied up with a bow.
Performances will be held from tonight, November 9-18, with a running time of approximately 2 hours. Tickets are $15 for the general public. Easy parking is available at the MSU Football Stadium. Director pre-show talks and talkbacks with the cast will take place during the run. Tickets and more information can be found at www.theatre.msu.edu.
