Matrix Teens and Black and Brown Theatre Partner for Bilingual ALICE IN WONDERLAND

Members of the Matrix Theatre Teen Company will perform with Black and Brown Theatre in Wonderland: La Niña Perdida, a bilingual adaptation of the story of Alice in Wonderland running Thursday, October 26 through Sunday, October 29. Friday performance is8 pm; Saturday performances are 5 and 8 pm; and Sunday performance is at 5 pm. Doors open 30 minutes before each show, and there is no late seating. Tickets can be purchased for $15 cash at the door, or online at www.wonderlandbilingual.eventbrite.com for $10 adult and $7 teens (must bring ID to show). Free parking is adjacent to the theatre. All performances are at Matrix Theatre located at 2730 Bagley in the heart of southwest Detroit's Mexicantown. Interested classes/groups may call 313 967 0999, ext. 3 by Tuesday October 17 to attend a mid-day matinee (15-minute preview of the show, and optional 10-minute Q&A with the actors Friday, October 27.

Adapted from the Lewis Carroll novel, translated by Paula Prieto, and edited by Black and Brown Theatre founder Emilio Rodriguez, the play is set at a quinceañera where we find Alice struggling with her transition to adulthood and longing to escape into a world of fantasy, ultimately realizing that even the fantasy world is met with challenges.

"We are thrilled to offer a multi-cultural Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) experience geared toward teens and young adults in Detroit," said Matrix Director of Education Colleen Cartwright. "We love to collaborate with schools, community youth programs and arts organizations whenever possible. The Black and Brown Theatre and Matrix Theatre Partnership is a natural fit because of our common commitment to challenging norms and our affinity for inclusive and original/adaptive works. This bilingual adaption of the story of Alice in Wonderland is an exciting project, especially for southwest Detroit." Cartwright went on to say how thrilled both she and Rodriguez are to provide this opportunity for young teens to receive mentoring from professional actors and gain experience at performing in a professional show.

"This show is a great opportunity for me to get a feel of the real acting world," said Gabby (Gabrielle) Clayton, a Western High School senior. "I get to watch and see how professionals do it. I'm excited to see how it all comes together, because Wonderland is such a magical place." Other Teen Company cast members include Alondrá Vázquez, a senior at Western International High School; Cass Technical High School senior Joelle Sanders and junior Briauna Willis; and Yasir Muhammad, a senior at Detroit Edison Public School Academy (DEPSA) Early College of Excellence.

Emilio Rodriguez, founding Artistic Director of Black and Brown Theatre Company, said this project is part of the Company's Classics in Color Series which allows students of color and the community at large to experience diverse and dynamic representations of characters in roles not historically accessible to people of color. "Black and Brown Theatre is excited to partner with the Matrix Teen Company, so that actors can serve as mentors both on and offstage."
