Susan Sontag once wrote, "Photographs alter and enlarge our notions of what is worth looking at and what we have the right to observe." In the age of selfies and social media, where every person with a smartphone is both photographer and curator, meanings, identities, and legacies can be shaped and interpreted in a multitude of ways. Does any photograph do justice to the reality it tries to capture?

In her smart new play titled Really, playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury examines the particular and diverse lenses through which we see ourselves, each other, and our place in the world.

The play follows a young woman photographer, her artist boyfriend Calvin, and his mother. Like many artists, she struggles to capture on film what she envisions in her mind. For her new project, she invites Calvin's mother to their studio for a portrait session. As the photo shoot progresses, the women grapple with their memories of the man who was once the center of their lives, and what it means for them now that he's gone.
