Gulfshore Playhouse-Where a S.T.A.R. is Born

Gulfshore Playhouse is looking to give teens the star treatment this summer with a brand new intensive educational program.  "The S.T.A.R. Program" (Student Theatre Artists in Residence), an immersion into the art and business of theatre, is available for students ages 14 and up and will take place at the Norris Center June 8th-19th, 2009.

Student Theatre Artists in Residence is an educational opportunity developed for Southwest Florida teens by Gulfshore Playhouse and its educational arm ART SMART.  This two-week exclusive and intensive seminar will introduce students to both the creative side and the business of theatre, along with basic technical theatre training.

Participants will work directly with Gulfshore Playhouse Founder and Producing Artistic Director, Kristen Coury, who will instruct the S.T.A.R. teens in acting.  This portion will shed light on character development, scene breakdown, breathing and relaxation, as well as audition technique.  Students will also benefit from discussion with and mentoring by professional actors, agents, directors and choreographers.  Technical instruction, with qualified creative designers, will expose the teens involved to the design process and the basic elements of technical theatre, such as lighting, sound and basic set design.

Gulfshore Playhouse founder and Producing Artistic Director Kristen Coury states, "I'm thrilled to be able to offer this opportunity to young adults in our community.  It will be a good opportunity for students of theatre to learn both the craft and the business side of our career."

The program will culminate with a Showcase Performance at 8pm on June 20th, open to the community, allowing students to utilize their new acting skills and display their talents, as well as the new and enhanced skill sets developed as S.T.A.R. participants.

Gulfshore Playhouse is Naples' first self producing-professional theatre company, currently producing exclusively at the Norris Center in downtown Naples.  Gulfshore Playhouse is devoted to creating nationally noteworthy professional theatre - from the powerful and inspiring classics, to innovative new works.  It is committed to bringing the best theatre professionals in our country to the stages and the classrooms of Southwest Florida.

Through its educational program, ART SMART, which is currently up and running in both Collier and Lee County, theatre-based workshops are brought into classrooms during the school day to teach curriculum content.  Correlating with the Sunshine State Standards, these workshops teach literacy and numeracy skills while fostering self-esteem, self-confidence and cooperative learning.  ART SMART is now offering Adult Classes at the Norris Center, for ages 14 and up.

Enrollment is open now for this unique educational experience.  The program runs June 8th-19th, 2009 at the Norris Center in Downtown Naples from 9:00am to 1:00pm.  The cost for participants is $325 for the two-week seminar.  Those interested in S.T.A.R. this summer can call 239-566-8394 or email Kcoury@gulfshoreplayhouse.org.
