Palm Beach Photo Centre Announces Upcoming Exhibitions 2018-2019

Laurence Gartel

Digital Titan

November 17 to January 5

Laurence Gartel's trailblazing Digital Art was unthinkable when he started his career in 1975. He was working at Media Study/Buffalo on analog system computers when he met video guru Nam June Paik. Gartel's vision was to create electronic images, capture them with a still camera off a monitor as there were no saving devices or software to store the created picture. He saw these images as works of Art that would eventually replace painting. In 1985 he delivered the keynote speech at the First Pan Pacific Computer Conference in Melbourne, Australia predicting the future of the world which landed him on the front page of The Australian Newspaper. This was the same year he taught Andy Warhol how to use the Amiga Computer to create the album cover for Debbie Harry (Blondie). It was a moment when "Pop Art met Digital Art." In 1989, the book Laurence Gartel: A Cybernetic Romance was published, and he created the first Digital Art cover for Forbes Magazine. In 1991, Gartel had a featured exhibition at the Norton Museum of Art, and in 2009 he received the Photo Centre's prestigious FOTOmentor Award. In his 40-year career, he created artwork for 57th Grammy Awards, Newport Jazz Festival, NASA, the Monaco International Film Festival and more. Gartel's exhibition at the Photo Center will feature unique works both old and new, along with many of the major awards the artist has received.

The recipient of the Palm Beach Photographic Centre's FOTOmentor Award during FOTOfusion 2019, Vincent Versace is an internationally recognized pioneer in the art and science of digital photography. One of the founding Nikon Ambassadors who has been hailed as "one of the top photography artists and visual storytellers of this era," Versace is a recipient of the Computerworld Smithsonian Award in Media Arts & Entertainment and the Shellenberg fine art award. His work is part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution's Museum of American History, and he has been published in numerous national newspapers and magazines. Based in Los Angeles, he divides his time between commercial and fine art photography assignments, teaching, and consulting for such suppliers as Nikon, Epson, Nik, OnOne, X-Rite, Adobe, Sunbounce and others. His best-selling books include >From Oz to Kansas: Almost Every Black & White Technique Known to Mankind and Welcome to Oz 2.0: A Cinematic Approach to Digital Still Photography with Photoshop, which Shutterbug Magazine called "the best how-to book of the year." His exhibition at the Photo Centre will feature images illustrating the many facets of Vincent's work, from his beautiful portraits of flowers and landscapes to infrared images and cultural and celebrity portraits.

Jill Enfield

The New Americans

March 23 to May 25

The daughter of a Holocaust survivor, fine art photographer Jill Enfield is fascinated by the immigrant experience - the similar threads in all such stories and whether they are viewed as "outsiders or Americans." Accordingly, she initiated the "New Americans" project to explore the immigrant experience, and to present portraiture of that identity within the journey of a life. For two years, she combed the Hudson Valley in search of discarded windows. Their distressed exteriors echo the hardship of what it means to be an immigrant. Enfield's ideas find their fullest expression in the Greenhouse, located in Room 5. This structure, assembled from abandoned window frames, shares the ghostlike fragility of the glass panels that house her images. Enfield's courageous decision to create these images using wet-plate collodion, a 150 year-old photographic technique fraught with difficulty and uncertain outcome, reinforces the precarious nature of immigration itself. Although current modes of transportation have improved, and people coming to the United States today can step on an airplane rather than being crammed into the hold of a ship for processing at Ellis Island, the undertaking of immigration remain filled with challenges. Her portraits are tangible displays of heritage, genealogy, homeland, and transition, and her passion culminated in the award-winning books Photo Imaging: A Complete Guide to Alternative Processes as well as Jill Enfield's Guide to Alternative and Historical Photographic Processes.

Adam Stoltman

Parks and People

Adam Stoltman has been a photographer and editor for more than 30 years, whose work has appeared in Time, Newsweek, LIFE, Sports Illustrated, The New York Times, Paris Match and more. He has covered 12 Olympic Games and most major sporting events. Presented at the Natural Areas Conservancy in New York City, Stoltman's Parks and People exhibition documents New Yorkers enjoying recreation and solace in natural areas and wild spaces throughout the city. The 18-month photography project captured the places where nature is being restored within one of the most diverse and complex urban places in the world.

23rd Annual Members' Show

August 24 to October 26

FREE Opening Reception on August 23, 6 to 8 pm

Palm Beach Photographic Centre's annual juried exhibition will showcase the work of its members, both inside the Photo Centre and on its Web site, www.workshop.org. A Best of Show cash prize of $950 will be awarded, as will two Merit Awards for free tuition for a FOTOfusion Passport or a Master Workshop. This year's winners will be announced at the exhibition's opening reception on August 23. Also on display at the Photo Centre will be The FOTOcamp Exhibition, showcasing works by the talented young people, ages 10 to 17, who participated in that summer's FOTOcamp for Kids.
