Museum Of Contemporary Art Presents SYNERGISM: EXATERINA AND VICTOR KHROMIN, 3/23-5/21

By:

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami will launch its spring season with Synergism: Ekaterina and Victor Khromin. The exhibition centers on a search for freedom of expression as the husband and wife team emigrated from the Soviet Union to the United States on a life-long journey towards the contemporary art scene. Synergism will be on display from March 23 through May 21, 2017. The artist's reception will be held on Thursday, March 30, 7-9 p.m. with admission of $10 to the general public, free to MOCA members and North Miami residents.

Synergism will feature paintings, installations, and video by Ekaterina and Victor Khromin. The Russian-born husband and wife chart an artistic territory quite their own, painting on bas-reliefs that are collages of found objects. Their works reveal pioneering approaches to art-making created by the synergy of technologies in art conservation.

By combining a number of conventional fine art media, the Khromins create new art objects filled with complexity of texture and chromatic harmony in some works, and a monochromatic palette in other works. Using everyday household items, Ekaterina explores their ambiguous meaning, creating abstract reliefs on the canvas surface and destroying all recognizable and semantic meaning of the individual elements in a mosaic-like composition. At the junction of each composition, there is a natural merger of three art historical approaches: conceptual art, pop art, and minimalism.

"We are pleased to present Synergism: Ekaterina and Victor Khromin. This is the first time MOCA presents a husband/wife team of Finnish/Russian descent. We are thrilled at how MOCA expands its artistic horizons providing exhibition opportunities to international recognized artists." said MOCA Interim Director Natasha Colebrook-Williams. "Our mission continues to be to present diverse programs and serve the entire South Florida community."

The couple's artistic journey began in Soviet Russia as the two young, professionally trained artists chose to explore their creative impulses. Victor was a trained art conservator and member of the art conservation section of the Soviet Artists Union and Ekaterina was a book illustrator. Their life journey took the couple halfway across the globe in pursuit of new challenges. Today, Ekaterina and Victor's works are included in both national and international collections.
