Lynn University's 2017–18 CLASSICAL CONCERT SEASON Announced

Lynn University's Conservatory of Music announces 2017-18 classical concert season:

Jon Robertson, dean of Lynn University Conservatory of Music and Philharmonia Guest Conductor, today announced the 2017-18 concert season. "Our talented students and extraordinary faculty look forward to sharing the beautiful world of music during our eighth season in the Keith C. and Elaine Johnson Wold Performing Arts Center, a world-class concert hall that enhances our performing artists' musical offerings," said Robertson. "Our 2017-18 season will present a variety of musical offerings designed to enrich the artistic spirit and nourish the soul. Please join us for a magnificent season."

Concerts run from September through May in the Wold Performing Arts Center, the Amarnick-Goldstein Concert Hall or the Snyder Sanctuary, all located on Lynn's Boca Raton campus.

Lynn Philharmonia

The Lynn Philharmonia sets the standard for professional symphonic training. Now in its 25th season as a full symphony, the Philharmonia continues to present high-quality concerts with a wide-ranging repertoire. Under the musical direction of Maestro Guillermo Figueroa, the Lynn Philharmonia attains a professional level of performance, enjoying tremendous public support for its six annual symphonic programs. The Philharmonia distinguishes itself through its orchestral training program and ensures consistent performance opportunities for every instrumentalist. Series tickets are $180 for orchestra and $157 for mezzanine.

Marc Vallon Bassoon Recital

A native of Paris, Vallon holds degrees in bassoon and chamber music from the Paris Conservatoire, as well as a degree in philosophy from the Sorbonne. For twenty years, he performed with the Baroque Orchestra of Amsterdam, and is considered one of the world's foremost experts on Baroque bassoon. Vallon will give a master class on Feb. 16 at 7 p.m.

Guillermo Figueroa Violin Recital

Violin Master Classes with Elmar Oliveira

Internationally renowned performer Elmar Oliveira, Lynn's Distinguished Artist in Residence, is a devoted teacher and promoter of young violinists. He was the first violinist to receive the coveted Avery Fisher Prize and the first and only American violinist to win the Gold Medal at Moscow's prestigious Tchaikovsky International Competition.

Piano Master Class with Leon Fleisher

As a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 2007, pianist Leon Fleisher was recognized as a "consummate musician whose career is a testament to the life-affirming power of art." Mostly Music Series

This unique concert series better acquaints audiences with not only music, but also the lives and artistic development of the Western world's great composers. Beethoven

Debussy

A crucial figure in the transition to the modern era in Western music, Claude Debussy remains one of the most famous and influential of all composers. He was the most prominent figure in developing "impressionistic" music, although he intensely disliked the term when applied to his own music, which often reflected the activities and turbulence in his life in French literary circles.

Spotlight No. 2: Music of Leo Brouwer

Cuban composer, guitarist and music director, Leo Brouwer became an UNESCO composer in 1987. He holds degrees from the Juilliard and Hartt School on Music. A student of Vincent Persichetti, his compositions reflect classical, Afro-Cuban, jazz and avant-garde influences. A prolific composer, he has written hundreds of works including the film score for Like Water for Chocolate.

The Roger Voisin Memorial Trumpet Competition was established by celebrated trumpeter Marc Reese in honor of his teacher and mentor. This competition is made possible by a generous donation from Douglass and Susan Kay with support from the Voisin Family Trust. The competition is open to trumpeters currently enrolled as full-time college students, with an age limit of 27.

Dr. Laura Bennett Cameron (principal, Dallas Winds; University of Texas-Arlington) will present a recital of French music by composer Roger Boutry (b. 1932, Grand Prix de Rome). Guest Bassoonist Scott Pool

International Recitalist and Recording Artist Scott Pool currently serves as the professor of Texas A&M Corpus Christi, and is the director of the Talis Music Festival in Switzerland, as well as the Orfeo Music Festival in Italy. In addition to the moving Sonata for Bassoon and Piano by John Steinmetz, this concert will highlight music from Scott Pool's upcoming CD, Solo, that explores a wide range of music for unaccompanied bassoon.

Milk and Honey

A collaborative concert of the Lynn Philharmonia Orchestra and the Live at Lynn Series, this showcase musical features a full cast of professional stage performers who bring this delightful show to life in honor of the 70th anniversary of the birth of Israel. Derived from Israeli folk music and dance, the show's book is by Don Appell with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman. The underlying thread of the story is the fierce love Israeli pioneers have for their new freedom in the Promised Land, as it reveals two touching romances: one is between a mature American widow in Israel as a tourist and a retired American businessman visiting his married daughter.

Flute Master Class with Néstor Torres

With his rhythmic and mellifluous jazz flute sound, Néstor Torres has released 14 solo recordings, earning four Latin Grammy nominations and one Latin Grammy Award. He has collaborated with such diverse artists as Gloria Estefan, Kenny Loggins, Dave Matthews, Herbie Hancock, Tito Puente and more.
