Jan McArt Presents Dan Clancy's A HOME

By:

Jan McArt Presents Dan Clancy's A HOME ImageAccording to award-winning playwright Dan Clancy, his latest work "A HOME tells the story of a Brooklyn family over the course of 60 years. You will easily find your own story in theirs."

A HOME will be presented, for one night only, as part of the 'Jan McArt's New Play Readings' series at Boca Raton's Lynn University on Monday, March 12th in the Keith C. and Elaine Johnson Wold performing Arts Center, at 7:30 PM.

Directed by John Tolley, it stars Niki Fridh, Michael McKeever, Angie Radosh and Clay Cartland.

Clancy's plays have been produced throughout the country and around the world. His award-winning drama, THE TIMEKEEPERS, was presented at Fort Lauderdale's Island City Stage in 2013, and wound up winning six South Florida Carbonell Theatre Awards, including 'Best Play of the Year.'

He has since become a favorite at Jan McArt's New Plays' reading series where several of his works have been performed, including his play MIDDLETOWN, which was first developed as part of the series in 2016, and received a full production at the Boca West Theatre later that year (2016 Carbonell Nomination for 'Best New Work'); as well as his musical (written with composer Lynn Portas) OUR TIME, presented in the play reading series in 2015; and his play PROPOSITION 8, which was also read in this series in 2013, then produced the following year at the Desert Rose Playhouse in Rancho Mirage, CA, under the title POSTER BOYS.

"The Jan McArt Reading Series has been a gift to me," says Clancy. "And each time a new play of mine has been accepted into the program, the script I leave with is always stronger than the one I went in with. This is because I have a chance to get to know my story and characters more deeply, and to work with some of the finest actors and directors in South Florida who help develop the play."

Producer Jan McArt's mission with this series is to develop new work by South Florida playwrights. And McArt says "This promises to be one of the best we've ever presented here, and I can't wait to see how it plays out on our stage, after a solid week of work with this marvelous cast and director."

She runs this award-winning play reading series at Lynn, where playwrights get the chance to bring a new play to life, working with a cast and a director for five days - rehearsing, re-writing, rehearsing, rewriting. Then, at the end of those five days, their new, polished, reworked play is presented to the public in performance, fully staged, with actors up on their feet, scripts in hand, employing minimal costumes, sets, lighting and sound, to aid them in the presentation of the new work.

"I immensely enjoyed writing MIDDLETOWN," Clancy says. "It gave me the opportunity to explore the idea of 'What constitutes friendship.' I now wanted to explore the question 'What is a family?' It's not my family's story, but there are moments that mirror events from my own life. And some of the play's events are based on friends' stories."

As for the play's setting, he adds "I lived in Brooklyn for 23 years. I know it well."

A HOME is the fourth and final presentation of this Lynn play reading series' 2017-2018 season. Next season's lineup will soon be announced.

Tickets are currently available at $10 each for 'A HOME.' Call 561-237-9000, or go to www.lynn.edu/tickets for more information.
