Holiday Favorites Ring in the Season at the Lake Worth Playhouse

Family Holiday Show and Concert Series Offer a Variety of Music Choices

  
The Lake Worth Playhouse continues to offer eclectic programming in its 2008-2009 season, kicking off the holiday season with a diverse menu of musical fare. A playful family holiday musical leads the line-up, followed by a concert series that includes a New Year's Eve jazz concert, a local Klezmer band, a Valentine's Day swing celebration, a world-renowned doo-wop group and a nine-piece jazz-rock band.  

Once Upon a Holiday           
(Saturday, November 29, 2008 at 7:00pm and Sunday, November 30, 2008 at 2:00pm)
                
The holiday musical, Once Upon a Holiday, returns to the Playhouse after its sold-out area premiere in December 2007. Written and directed by local playwright and children's book author, Lisa Bankert, this family-friendly show features music and dance to celebrate traditional holidays from around the world and throughout the ages. The story follows of a pack of North Pole elf-kids as they awake on Deck-the-Halls Day filled with all the excitement of the season. But when they begin their decking duties, they discover Mrs. Claus' favorite ornament is missing.  As they dig through generations of decorations, the holiday ornaments spring to life with song and dance from holidays past and present, leading the young elves on a merry journey throughout the decades. Musical numbers include ballads, White Christmas, The Christmas Song and I'll Be Home for Christmas; upbeat songs, Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree, Winter Wonderland and Sleigh Ride; kids' favorites, Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Santa Claus is Coming to Town; classic songs from all generations, including favorites made famous by The Andrews Sisters, The Beatles and The Ronettes; and music from around the globe, including Feliz Navidad, Hanukkah, Oh, Hanukkah and Mele Kalikimaka. Tickets are $15 for adults (12 and up) and $10 for kids.
 

The Latin Jazz Project

The Lake Worth Playhouse kicks off its 2008-2009 concert series with a New Year's Eve celebration featuring The Latin Jazz Project, a local band that blends hot Latin-Jazz, Afro-Cuban, and typical Cuban instrumental music with the unique sound of the Latin Jazz Project. The nine-member band performs the music of Duke Ellington, Chucho Valdes and other Latin-Jazz greats. Admission includes the live performance as well as hors d'oeuvres, party favors and a champagne toast.

Klezmania

For the first concert of 2009, the Playhouse presents an authentic Klezmer band that mixes the traditional and the new. Klezmainia performs a range of musical numbers from heart-rending ballads to exuberant wedding dances, and is known for its melodies and rhythms that blend the flavors of the East and West. 

Swing 8n't All

The Playhouse celebrates Valentine's Day with popular swing band, Swing 8n't All. These local favorites are back by popular demand with special guest vocalist, Roberta Rehner, featuring the swing sounds of Mack the Knife, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Moonlight Serenade, New York , New York, My Way and more. Admission includes the live performance plus Valentine's Day treats and a romantic setting to commemorate the holiday. 

Legends of Doo Wop

Known for their tight group harmonies, this band features the well-known talents of Jimmy Gallagher (The Passions,) Tony Marsa (The Crests,) Frank Mancuso (The Imagination,) and Steve Horn (The Five Sharks.) After playing to SRO audiences from New York to Los Angeles and throughout Europe, The Legends of Doo Wop come to the Playhouse to perform popular hits with vocals unheard since the early days of rock n' roll. Their members have four songs in the Top 100 Greatest Hits listing recently released by WCBS radio in New York.

Big Brass Machine

The Playhouse rounds out the concert series with Big Brass Machine, a nine-piece jazz-rock band playing a collection of rock, funk, Motown and R&B favorites from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Their specialties include hits from Blood, Sweat & Tears, Chicago and Tower of Power. 

Individual tickets are $25 per concert ($35 for New Year's Eve Concert with champagne reception.) Subscriptions are $70-110. Tickets to all performances and events are on sale now.
