GableStage at the Biltmore presents a special engagement of Charla, a Chat with José Marti, written and performed by Chaz Mena, presented in the Hialeah High School Auditorium on Friday, May 28th and Saturday, May 29th at 8pm and on Sunday, May 30th at 2pm. Admission is free of charge.

Charla is a unique combination of play and performance art which provides insight into one of the seminal figures of Cuban history, poet, journalist and revolutionary, José Martí. In 1891, Martí is preparing for his first trip to Tampa and Ybor City. Time is running out for the Cuban independence movement and Martí must inspire and galvanize his people to join the revolution against Spain in order to achieve a just society in Cuba. As he readies himself for the journey, Martí reflects upon his childhood, his studies, his writings, and his loves. Charla, which in Spanish means "a chat", allows us to appreciate the challenges Martí faced in jump-starting the Cuban Revolution.

Following the 45 minute performance, there will be a question and answer period with Chaz Mena as Dr. Martí.

Chaz Mena has an MFA from Carnegie-Mellon University, has appeared in film and television and is a seasoned, theatrical actor. An award winning performer, Mr. Mena is now working on an up-coming book about playing Martí in Florida. His other program, Menédez: Claiming La Florida for King & Cross, was also created with a grant from FHC.

Charla will be presented at Hialeah High School Auditorium, located at 251 East 47th Street, Hialeah, Florida.

This event is funded by The Children's Trust, a dedicated source of revenue established by voter referendum to improve the lives of children and families in Miami-Dade County...and with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.
