In its 19th year, the FST WRITE A PLAY program begins again with the modern twist on a classic tale: PINOCCHIO. Local playwrights and FST staffers, Beth Duda & Adam Ratner, adapted the play, originally penned by Carlo Collodi.

Did you know that since 1991, the WRITE A PLAY program has impacted more than 1,000,000 children all around the world - reaching as far as Scotland, China, and Russia! An arts-in-education initiative, WRITE A PLAY has introduced thousands of students to professional theatre and provides them with the skills and motivation to create original plays. High energy, interactive performances, workshops and long-term residencies inspire children's creativity, bolster their communication and literary skills, and instill in them an appreciation of the arts.

PINOCCHIO is the "play that sets the example" - children travel from the Sarasota and Manatee counties to see the play on the Gompertz Theatre stage, wide-eyed and giggling as the professional actors perform for them. BEGINNING NEXT WEEK, the production of Pinocchio will also tour to local schools to reach those schools that may not be able to afford bus programs or transportation to Downtown Sarasota. Touring is a large part of the WRITE A PLAY program, as the Playmakers tour will start traveling in November to schools all over Florida, presenting playwriting workshops and performances that will inspire the children to write their own original works!

Pinocchio runs through November 19; Monday - Friday at 9:45am, 11:00am, and 12:15pm. If you're not familiar with the WRITE A PLAY program, I'd love for you to attend a performance - it's awe-inspiring and beautiful to see the children light up with glee. The play is perfect for the young; but, also the young at heart.
