Magnetic Theatricals Announces Dates

For Inaugural Production, Defining Code Red

  • Socially conscious theatrical production company brings its Art Inspiring Action message to the stage

Magnetic Theatricals, Inc., a not-for-profit production company specializing in plays that highlight social issues, has announced show dates for its inaugural play, Defining Code Red. Inspired by actual events of violence by children against children in Miami, Defining Code Red will take the stage on Friday, February 23rd at 8pm and will continue through Sunday February 25th at the Riviera Theatre located at 1560 S Dixie Hwy, Coral Gables. Tickets are available for purchase on the Magnetic Theatricals website, www.magnetictheatricals.org.

'We're delighted to open this play in our own backyard of South Florida,' said Diane Perless, Executive Director of Magnetic Theatricals. 'Our mission is to not only entertain but to have people discussing important social issues on their way out of the theatre. Defining Code Red is an unbelievable play and a great topic for conversation.'

Producing Artistic Director Justin Koren an established member of the South Florida theatre community and a recipient of the Miami Herald's Silver Knight Award for Drama founded Magnetic Theatricals in 2005 and authored the play.  He was inspired by the tragedy that occurred at Miami's Southwood Middle School on February 3, 2004, when a 14-year old boy was murdered inside a school bathroom by his classmate  during school hours. Although inspired by a real-life event, the play does not mention names of individuals or disclose specific locations, enabling the story to unfold in any school, in any town, in any country.

'I attended Southwood Middle School and was deeply affected by the violence that occurred there in 2004,' Koren said. 'Defining Code Red does not point fingers or assign blame. It does, however, show the many faces of people who have been affected by such a disturbing and tragic event. I hope the play will help us heal as a community.'

Following the conclusion of each performance, a brief panel discussion will take place. Only through dialogue and increased awareness can an attempt be made to take steps toward positive change.
