BWW Blog: Why I Chose Music as My Major Image

The time has come for you to start thinking about college and what career you want to pursue. Do you want to be a doctor? A musician? An actor? A psychiatrist? A teacher? etc. What do you see yourself doing after college?

When we all were younger, we were all asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Most of those answers varied. I can remember being asked that by some of my family members and I have always wanted to be a princess. But, that will probably never happen.

Now fast forward to the 2017-2018 school year where I am a senior in high school. I have to make the most important decision of my life. What do I see myself doing as a career? Do I see myself as a doctor? NO... I am terrified of needles and going to the doctor so that is out of the picture. What about a teacher? I have thought about it but I do not see myself in that profession. But, what about music? If you had told me in middle school that I would be studying music in college, I would have said, "No way." But, here I am and I am having so much fun being a music major.

I did not take music seriously until my freshman year of high school. I was in chorus all four years and was one of the top vocalists at my high school. My junior year was when my vocal studies really kicked in. I was a part of the Palm Beach Opera Studio my Junior and Senior year. After being in Studio for the first seven months, I started to realize that this is what I want to do in life. I want to do music. I want to sing and be on Broadway. My biggest dream is to play the role of Christine Daae? in Phantom of the Opera.

I chose to study music because I love to perform. It is the only thing I see myself doing. I do not see myself being a teacher, a doctor, etc. I am very blessed to be studying music at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, FL. They have an amazing fine arts program here and I am learning from the best. Even though music is very hard, I am pushing myself to do my best. Music is like learning a new language. It is very hard to grasp. But, I love it and it is what I want to pursue a career in.
