DRACULA Come to Theatre Memphis

By:

DRACULA Come to Theatre Memphis ImageDracula, the wild and shocking, blood-soaked adaption by William McNulty of the Bram Stoker classic horror tale, opens on the Lohrey Stage at Theatre Memphis and runs October 12-28, 2018. In this re-telling, Professor Van Helsing and his brave comrades hunt to destroy the profoundly evil Count Dracula. But the Count is exceedingly resourceful, employing superhuman strength, psychic powers, and shape-changing to confound his antagonists as an inevitable confrontation ensues.

"I first read Dracula when I was a teenager," says director Jason Spitzer. "I was hooked immediately. There's something so terrifying to me about a monster that can enslave you by taking control of your mind." Subsequently, having seen all the films, in 2008 he found himself in Louisville, Kentucky seeing The Actors Theatre long-running Dracula on a whim. "It was fantastic. Fast moving. Thrilling," Spitzer emotes. Loaded with special effects and blood he knew that if the "Count" came to Theatre Memphis, it had to be that adaptation and he should direct it. He laughs, "Nightmare come true."

As a part of the A.S.K. Series, a pre-show talk back will be held from 6:15pm to 6:45pm on Thursday, October 18, 2018, with the production make-up designers and director Spitzer. Student tickets for that night only will be $10 and must be purchased by calling 901.682.8323 or visiting the box office at 630 Perkins Extd., Memphis, Tennessee, 83117. Discounted student tickets are not available online. It is recommended that students attending Dracula be 13 years of age or older.

Theatre Memphis Executive Producer Debbie Litch is not scared a bit that this production will not be a hit. "With a tried and true script that has consistently been received so well and a committed and dedicated director who literally brought the script to us, this production will hit all the right notes, even if it isn't a musical," Litch quips. "Dracula is the perfect October offering for our patrons."
