Portland Ovations Features Doktor Kaboom, 10/19

Portland Ovations kicks off its School-Time Performance Series at Merrill Auditorium with a presentation of Doktor Kaboom! on Tuesday, October 19th at 10:30 a.m. The performance is geared for school groups from grades three, four and five.
 
Actor and educator, David Epley, uses his improvisational skills to get kids excited about math and science by portraying a zany scientist with a penchant for bangs and blasts, a.k.a. Doktor Kaboom. He leads students on a sidesplitting journey of increasingly spectacular (and usually successful) science experiments designed to involve, excite, educate and entertain. This hour long performance is designed to enhance Maine curriculum standards for science, math, and the visual and performing arts.
 
Additional educational workshops are available to compliment the students' experience at the performance. Portland Ovations and The Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine are partnering to present Simple Machines, a workshop that explores the mechanics and physics of simple machines and discusses their practicality in daily use; as well as Smart Art, a workshop that examines the relationship between the left and right brain.

The performance is also open to home-schooled children.
 
School groups wishing to combine the performance and a workshop may be eligible for Ovations' Destination Portland Program, designed to help subsidize the cost of transportation for the students to and from Portland. Please contact Gretchen Berg with questions about eligibility.
 
Ovations' next School-Time Performance is scheduled for Wednesday, December 1st at Westbrook Performing Arts Center and is also geared for students grades three, four and five. The performance is a play by Betty Quan of Canada's Green Thumb Theatre entitled Wired! and explores growing up in an online world and the topic of cyber-bullying. Reservations for this presentation are also available.
