America’s Youngest Shakespeare Troupe kicks off Shakespeare Youth Festival, LA this weekend.

The Los Angeles Drama Club (LADC) - an award-winning local youth arts and literacy organization, opens its doors to the public with A Midsummer Nights Dream at Club Fais Do Do (5253 West Adams Ave) at 1pm on November 21 & 22, tagged by a new lively dark comedy, UNSPOKEN - Personae in Peril - at Hollywood’s Lyric Theatre, December 4, 5, 12, 13.

The Shakespeare Youth Festival dovetails with the Company’s “10SecondsOfShakespeare” campaign, recently grabbing the attention of Mayor Garcetti and councilman President, Herb Wesson, both whom "spoke the speech" for the kids.

The young Shakespeareans wanted to put this country to the test: How hard is it to speak Shakespeare? 10 Seconds of Shakespeare is both a fundraiser for the local arts non-profit, but also an awareness campaign. So far the 10 Second bytes are proving that everyone - from the Mayor to a reformed gang member to a 5 year old child - can speak and understand Shakespeare as written.

“Being in Mid-City, where there are no after school programs, community centers or theaters - save the high walls of Nate Holden - a bit too high for our troupe - the kids have a home at Club Fais Do Do, in a neighborhood that is slowly being re-discovered” says Artistic Director and West Adams resident, Blaire Baron Larsen. Thus far, the Mid City troupe has put up Timon of Athens, The Tempest, Antony & Cleopatra- with a cast of about 20 kids per show. No small feat.

Next play on deck premieres at Hollywood's Lyric Theatre (520 N. La Brea) Unspoken features 10 Shakespearean characters from multiple plays who are stunned to realize that a "select group” of scholars and dramaturges are deciding their relevance (aka fate). With theme threads like privatization marginalization and censorship - the play feels timely, while Shakespeare-lovers react to the pending “modern translation” of the Canon by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Unspoken is the second play in a Trilogy which features Shakespeare's lesser known characters.

“It’s our mission to create the opportunity for young people to have exceptional artistic experiences in their own communities and neighborhoods - free” states Julia Walker Wyson, executive director. “One of our boys recently told us, ‘Without this, I think I’d be hiding behind a bush.’ That is why we do it.”
