A group of girls stand waiting in a room. We don't know what for, they may not entirely know themselves. But they do know they want their names to be called, and one by one, they will be. That’s the promise of this process. Or is that just what these girls have to believe to keep waiting there? Our lead begins the wait, as many around her do, with effervescent optimism. But with every name called comes a small rejection. With every new girl who comes in, an implicit, mounting pressure. With every close friend made, a looming loss. And slowly, she’ll become something else.
Natural Selection is an existential exploration of the ways women encounter their own subjectification. Ways that bind them together. Ways that separate them from one another. And ways that force them to rewrite their very sense of self.
