New West Symphony (NWS), with Grammy-winning conductor Michael Christie as Artistic and Music Director, has announced a 2020-21 season of digital concerts, paired with engaging complementary content, to be available streamed or on-demand. Christie is programming eight mini-festivals, held from October through June, that highlight the music, cultures and family traditions throughout Greater Los Angeles, while emphasizing connections with orchestra repertoire.
Director Ava DuVernay's Selma tells the story of the events leading up to Dr. Martin Luther King's landmark 1965 march for voting rights a?" an event that forever changed history. In honor of Dr. King's birthday and Black History Month, The Soraya will screen Selma on the large screen a?" with its score performed live by its composer, acclaimed jazz pianist Jason Moran a?" artistic director of Jazz at the Kennedy Center a?" with the New West Symphony conducted by Cheche Alara on Saturday, February 1 at 8:00pm at The Soraya.
Executive Director Thor Steingraber unveils the Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts' 2019-20 Season, which features a reconsideration of Randy Newman's musical Faust, in a concert format (May 9), an opening night recital with Itzhak Perlman accompanied by Rohan De Silva, piano (September 19), and a Beethoven 250th Birthday Celebration featuring six concerts beginning with Jonathan Biss, piano (October 15 & 16); other concerts include the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio (November 13), Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Pinchas Zukerman, Principal Guest Conductor and Violin Soloist (January 24), Christian Tetzlaff, violin, with Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (February 7), Academy of St Martin in the Fields with Joshua Bell (March 4) and Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra (March 25).
