LA Master Chorale to Present Haydn's THE CREATION at Disney Concert Hall, 4/10

By:

Los Angeles Master Chorale, conducted by Music Director Gershon, presents Joseph Haydn's monumental The Creation Sunday, April 10, 2011, 7:00 p.m., at Walt Disney Concert Hall. A masterful oratorio ripe with optimism, it is considered by many to be the composer's crowning achievement. Joining the Chorale for the performance are a trio of stellar artists: Elissa Johnston, soprano, acclaimed for her ethereal voice, sings the roles of Archangel Gabriel and Eve; Grammy and Emmy Award-winning baritone Sanford Sylvan, praised by the New York Times for the "sheer beauty" of his voice, appears as Archangel Raphael and Adam; and in the role of Archangel Urie is Hak Soo Kim, tenor, hailed for his recent debut with LA Opera.

The Creation, completed in 1798 near the end of Haydn's creative life, work weaves texts from Genesis, Psalms and John Milton's epic Paradise Lost to depict the creation of the world as portrayed in the book of Genesis, and reflects the composer's abiding faith and awe of nature. Written in three parts, the first is devoted to the elements, the second to animals and mankind, and the third to an earthly paradise.

"Haydn's masterpiece, one of the greatest and most imaginative choral works of all time, paints the opening passages of the Book of Genesis with music of incomparable wonder and joy," states Gershon.

This marks the second time the Chorale has performed the piece at Disney Hall. The first was in November 2003 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by Esa-Pekka Salonen, for one of the historic inaugural concerts heralding the opening of the celebrated venue.

Concert tickets to range from $19 to $129. Student Rush seats are $10 and are available at the box office two hours before the performance, subject to availability. For tickets and information, please call (213) 972-7282, or visit www.lamc.org. (Tickets can no longer be purchased at the Walt Disney Concert Hall Box Office except on concert days starting 2 hours prior to the performance.) The Walt Disney Concert Hall is located at 111 South Grand Avenue at First Street in downtown Los Angeles.
