The Big Picture at Hollywood Bowl Celebrates 75th Anniversary of 20th Century Fox 9/5
The Big Picture, one of the Hollywood Bowl's most popular annual programs, pays tribute this year to the extraordinary 75-year legacy of Twentieth Century Fox, Sunday, September 5, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. Turner Classic Movies' primetime anchor Robert Osborne hosts, with conductor David Newman leading the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra in an evening of orchestral film music performed live with popular scenes projected on the Bowl's big screen.
The Big Picture: The Films of Twentieth Century Fox will celebrate some of the greatest films in the studio's history including Star Wars, All About Eve, Cleopatra, Alien, Planet of the Apes and Avatar; and features music from such esteemed film music composers as Alfred Newman, John Williams, Alex North, Danny Elfman, Alan Silvestri, David Raksin, Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner and Lionel Newman.Conducting the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra is one of Hollywood's foremost composers, David Newman, who continually thrills audiences worldwide with his original voice and expert versatility. From critically-acclaimed dramas such as Brokedown Palace, War of the Roses, Heathers and Hoffa, to top-grossing comedies Norbit, Galaxy Quest, The Flintstones, Throw Mama from the Train, to award-winning animated films Ice Age, The Brave Little Toaster and Anastasia, and the more recent The Spirit and Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakuel, Newman has scored over 100 films in the 25 years of his career. Newman holds an Academy Award nomination for his score to the animated feature, Anastasia, and was the first composer to have his piece, 1001 Nights, performed in the Los Angeles Philharmonic's FILMHARMONIC Series, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. In 1987, Robert Redford selected Newman as musical director of the Sundance Institute and in 2007, he was elected President of the Film Music Society, a nonprofit organization formed by entertainment industry professionals to preserve and restore motion picture and television music. Newman is part of a film music composer dynasty that includes his late father, nine-time Oscar winning composer Alfred Newman (who ran the music department at Twentieth Century Fox for 20 years), his cousin Randy Newman, his uncles Emil and Lionel Newman, and his siblings Thomas and Maria Newman.Robert Osborne has served as primetime host and anchor of Turner Classic Movies since its launch in 1994. He also co-hosts TCM's weekly Essentials showcase, with Alec Baldwin, and has done several specials for the network, including his Private Screenings interviews with Hollywood luminaries. Osborne is also well known as a columnist and critic and served as host of the first-ever TCM Classic Film Festival, which took place in Hollywood in April 2010. Thanks to a series of books he's written on the subject of Hollywood's annual Academy Awards, he is known as the official biographer of Oscar. On Feb. 1, 2006, Osborne received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in January 2008, he received a special award from the National Board of Review for his contributions as a film historian.
